"Issues facing parents who have mental health problems"
A report was recently released concerning the issues faced by parents who have a mental health condition. The report discusses a lack of support for parents who are faced with mental health issues and their children who are affected by their parents’ mental health condition(s). The report was conducted by ‘Outside the Box’ workers who met with members of ‘Stepping Stones’ who are parents and discussed the issues that affect them and what services they would find helpful. Research was also conducted throughout Scotland and the UK and some common themes appeared concerning the issues faced by parents and the kind of support that they would find helpful. The research showed that over a third of people faced with mental health issues in the United Kingdom are parents, but generally, mental health services don’t account for the role as parents. The majority of these parents and their children ‘cope well’ with the mental health issues, but would benefit from extra support, but generally support for parents is not seen as a priority by local authorities, the NHS or national policies.
If you are affected by any of these issues, or have an opinion on the topic(s) discussed, we would like to hear from you. Email us at augment@btconnent.com
